Google Announces Hybrid Multi Cloud Platform That Works Across AWS and Azure

Google is making a strong push to establish first mover advantage in the increasingly hybrid multi-cloud future with the announcement of Anthos – its rebranded and revamped Cloud Services Platform which now allows businesses to manage their hybrid and multi cloud environments, spanning across on-premises data centre, GCP, as well as third-party public clouds including Google’s biggest competitors, AWS and Azure.

The open platform, based on the Google Kubernetes Engine, is designed to meet the “write once, run anywhere” mantra and will “help reduce the IT administration burden for enterprises that have opted to adopt a multi-cloud strategy because their developers will no longer need to learn different environments or application programming interfaces (APIs) to make that kind of setup work,” said Google’s SVP for Technical Infrastructure, Urs Hölzle.

This will give organisations greater freedom and ease to run, deploy and manage their applications on the cloud of their choice because let’s face it; while the term “multi cloud“ has been thrown around with increasing regularity, in practice it’s not exactly simple or straightforward. After all, from the public cloud vendors’ perspective, multi-cloud means potentially giving customers the option to move to a competing cloud. So there has never been a real incentive for them to make it a quick and painless process.

Therefore, this move by Google – to offer a hardware agnostic, single managed service that allows users to manage and deploy various workloads consistently regardless of the cloud they’re using – is definitely an interesting one that throws a spanner in the works, differentiates Google’s approach from its competitors and proves that the company’s “commitment to innovation and openness” statement is more than just lip service.

Now that Google has rocked the boat, let’s see how the other cloud providers react.
