Cyberview Sdn Bhd (Cyberview) and Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (Digi) are calling for more academics, universities, developers and registered businesses to apply to test their 5G use cases at the 5G OpenLab. This call for more applications is founded on the belief that extensive testing and collaboration between multiple parties lead to more data insights that will help accelerate the growth of the 5G ecosystem in the country.
Malaysia’s first 5G lab in Cyberview’s RekaScape opened its doors on 1 October 2019 and received a total of 44 applications, of which 13 use cases got the green light to proceed to the testing phase, and 8 tests have been carried out at the lab to date. The use cases come from the areas of Smart Healthcare, Smart City and Smart Mobility and are in line with the national ambition to strengthen 5G collaboration among local tech businesses and developers.
Praveen Rajan, Digi’s Chief Digital Officer believes that the best way to push for 5G adoption in the country is through a collaborative approach to build the 5G ecosystem together.
“Having a 5G-enabled lab dedicated to testing is an important and necessary step in facilitating the development of 5G in the nation, as it allows local developers the chance to innovate, create and grow. The initial test applications were encouraging and showed promising use cases. We believe there is a lot more potential to explore and are excited to uncover more innovation as more applications come through our doors,” said Praveen.
Shafinaz Salim, the Head of Technology Hub Development Division says that it is vital to ensure that the 5G OpenLab is in optimal condition to provide applicants with the ideal testing ground for their use cases. RekaScape is built to be a holistic ground to create, connect, grow and innovate towards the frontier of limitless possibilities and this collaboration is in line with its vision to ultimately commercialise ideas.
“We are continuously engaging with applicants who have run tests at RekaScape to pinpoint any areas of improvement so as to better facilitate the next batch of testing, with hopes of being the catalyst for an empowered community of entrepreneurs who are not only ready for 5G, but are well-positioned to scale up and expand their businesses via 5G,” she said.
Located in Cyberview’s RekaScape, the 5G OpenLab is more than 1,100 square feet collaborative space that will serve to advance new technology solutions and innovations with Digi and its technology partner, ZTE. Trials at the 5G OpenLab are conducted using 100MHz of the 3.5GHz spectrum where applicants can benefit from 5G’s super high speed, massive bandwidth and ultra-low latency connectivity in a live, controlled environment.
