‘With proper governance, life will improve for all’, -Benigno Aquino III,
Being a fan of metaphors, I took the liberty to borrow the quotation on effective governance from Filipino president, who certainly did not have any shortage of challenges to deal with during his presidential tenure – just like majority of organizations and their relationship/attitude towards Data Governance programmes.
In my previous post, we were discussing some traditional challenges of any data governance initiative – changing role of data stewards in light of data getting bigger as we speak (data lake versus data warehouse = and its connotations), data being siloed and the long-lasting ambition for holistic view of company data sources or data governance empowerment (frequently, lack of it).
Important fact (perhaps not always realized by all) is that data governance initatives are not revenue generating engine – they are here for effective risk management and operational efficiency (just a reminder).
Needless to say, having executive buy-in in place will certainly help to drive the data governance endeavour more smoothly, within a defined governance/analytics framework, outcomes of which should be measured, evaluated and sometimes challenged by data custodians in a collaborative fashion.
Taking into consideration some of the thoughts above and bearing in mind the grand goal of ‘time to value’ in relation to enterprise technology deployment – you might want to have a look at Data3Sixty, Massachussetts – based cloud data governance vendor, which aspires to enhance the intellect of organizational data in an agile manner.
In case you are active on data governance, data quality, master data management side of things and your organization potentially envisages some activity on data management front – Data3Sixty intend to bring the following elements into equation: knowledge, transparency and oversight, which clearly outlines New England based vendor’s solutions are after.
Data governance is fundamentally about the data details and its interrelated interdependencies – to emphasize how truly intertwined they are.
Jeff Shortis, company CEO, summed it up nicely in his blog: capture, contextualize, collaborate = being the key tenets of their solution approach.
Perhaps one area, where I would like to see additional clarification is their move from traditional data steward centrism towards data governance as the management of responsibilities around data – Data3Sixty suggests that the responsibility can be held by person, vendor, or application – hopefully we will get some more specific insights on this part (your opinion/comments certainly welcome).
To conclude, Sometimes it is the journey, that teaches you a lot about your destination.
