Online Hackathon by MAMPU gains Record Participation

The Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) once again ran its yearly hackathon beginning last week, but this time with a twist. It was conducted online and for 7 days or 168 hours. According to Dr. Yusminar Yunus, Director of Digital Government Division, MAMPU, this was to cater to the requests of many participants who wanted to join the hackathon but weren’t able to due to work commitments or school timing.

In the past, hackathons were held at MAMPU and would run for 48 hours straight. Which meant that the participants would not be allowed to leave the premise for that entire period to maintain the sanctity of the hackathon and prevent information from being leaked out or shared. This posed a problem to many as they would need to take leave from work and for schooling participants, it would mean not getting school work done.

This year with the participants only requiring to register online, and submission posted to their website, there were many more participants able to get involved. The participants only needed to attend the evaluation which was held for a day on the 25th of September at the Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Center (MaGIC) in Cyberjaya. Evaluation through Skype call was done for participants who were too far to travel to Kuala Lumpure.

Participation saw registration of 90 groups (253 persons) comprising of 34 groups in Public Sector category, 47 groups in University & Industrial category and 9 Groups in Secondary Students category. Product submission was from 22 – 24 September. A total of 66 groups comprising of 28 from the Public Sector, 31 from University and Industry category and 7 Groups from the Secondary Students category.

The hackathon this year had a record entry of 253 participants compared to 176 participants last year since the Open Data Hackathon inception in 2015. Also this year a total of 60500 MYR cash prizes were up for grabs.
