Sunway to Implement Smart Parking System

Visitors to Sunway Pyramid will soon be able to pay for their parking using their e-wallet. Members of the media previewed the Sunway Smart Parking system at the mall. The system is the largest, fully integrated license plate recognition system in Malaysia and supports multiple cashless payments options.

The ticketless and cashless parking solution supports major e-wallet partners including GrabPay, Alipay, WeChat Pay, Boost, Touch N Go, Maybank QR Pay as well as credit partners Visa, MasterCard, American Express, JCB, UnionPay and MyDebit. The payment methods are made possible through a partnership with Manage Pay Systems.

To use this system, visitors need to register their car plate number through the Sunway parking app or online on their website. Once registered, they can link their e-wallet of choice for making payment. After that, all they need to do is just drive in the mall, and their vehicle license plate will be scanned by the system. The parking boom gate will automatically open for you to enter.

For those who don’t want to use the system or have not registered, they can still use the traditional parking methods for now. Sunway plans to phase out the ticketing parking system in a year or two once the smart parking system comes into full effect.

The technology behind the smart parking system is from JieShun, a solutions provider from Shenzen, China. A leader in license plate recognition technology, their system is deployed in over 100,000 parking sites across China and globally. In Malaysia, Sunway is their biggest customer as the system will be integrated into the entire parking system in the Sunway vicinity.

The system will be deployed within Sunway City, which includes the mall, Sunway Hotels, Menara Sunway and Sunway Pinnacle. Over 10,000 parking bays in the vicinity will be covered. While the system will only be available for the public in the first quarter of 2020, online and in testing by season parkers and internal staff are underway. In fact, the system has been testing since late 2018 and has been in testing phases to ensure no glitches happen once fully implemented.

According to a representative from JieShun, “We need to make sure our system is robust and reliable. We designed this system with reliable hardware, software and also used a cluster deployment. The system can load balance automatically to ensure it works reliably. So far, the license plate recognition system has a 95% accuracy in recognising the car plates. We are continuously improving our algorithms to ensure the accuracy can be higher. In China, we can reach 99.7% accuracy. The system will work on all number plates.”

HC Chan, CEO of Sunway Malls & Theme Parks

HC Chan, CEO of Sunway Malls & Theme Parks, “Technology is an enabler for us. We want to provide our customers with the best technology and services for them to have a seamless experience whenever they come here.”

At the same time, he reiterated that Sunway will ensure that the data collected will be used accordingly in the right way.

“Data is very important, powerful and sensitive. At Sunway, we are mindful of that. Please be assured that we will be operating according to the highest standard. We will fully comply with all regulations and rules set to ensure privacy of data.”

Bryan YL Tan, Group CEO, Payment Services Business, Manage Pay added the Sunway license recognition parking system is the first in the country to integrate e-wallet payment systems to sit in its proprietary app. Data security is not only provided by Sunway but also by each app to ensure their transactions are secured.

Chan also explained that once this system is fully implemented and proven successful, other malls will want to emulate as well. They need to use technology as an enable or may end up being left behind.
