New data from a University of Rochester data scientist can show underage drinking trends based off social media posts.

Jiebo Luo, a computer science professor who teaches data mining, is finding ultra specific underage drinking habits from perusing Instagram. By using specialized computer commands and facial recognition software, Luo and his team of two graduate students can tell when teenagers drink, what they like to drink and it’s all broke down into age, race and gender.

With this information, Luo is trying to help others figure out why some teens drink and others don’t. In a research paper he prepared for a conference in California, Luo has found, for an example, teenage girls prefer drinking vodka and champagne. They’re don’t care much for beer. Teenage boys are more beer-friendly. And for some reason, local teens like to drink at around midnight.

“That information eventually could help schools, government and youth organizations to tackle this problem better,” Luo said.
